Press Here by Herve Tulet. Millie and I are in LOVE with the Press here series of children’s books. They are insanely fun and interactive ways to learn colors, I’m proud to say we have finally mastered blue!
Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots? by Carmela LaVigna Coyle. As a preschooler this Shannon’s very favorite book. She is/was an everyday princess. As a 4 year old she wore a Sleeping Beauty Dress every day for nearly a month. We would visit the grocery store in heels and a tiara and ride the plastic horse side saddle. “Because that’s what princesses do!” “Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots” and all the companion books shaped the way my little princess wore her crown. She was/is dirty, and energetic, and inquisitive, and curious, and risk taking, and adventurous, AND a princess. – Now it’s one of Millie’s Very Favorite!
Trashy Town by Andrea Zimmerman and David Clemesha. Millie and I checked this book out from the library a few months back. It’s a rhyming, sing–songy book about the trash man as he cleans up Trashy Town. Millie LOVED it. And by loved it, I mean we renewed it 3 times and had major tears when it absolutely had to go back. Since it was part of our nightly read everyday for over 9 weeks I thought it deserved a mention.
What Shannon (8) is Reading:
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. Note to readers: WAIT to watch the movie until after you’ve finished the book. Because the “Oh, it’s coming” and the “just wait it see what’s gonna happen to him” seriously stalls our progress. It’s a lovely tale that all girls and mommas would enjoy.
You Wouldn’t Want to Be Cleopatra! Shannon is obsessed with all things factual. She calls them fact books and she will read each and every one at least 100 times. The series she’s really into right now is called the “You Wouldn’t Want to Be” series, they are factual, and funny, and completely age appropriate and cover a multitude of topics. She knows a little about so many things lately it’s fascinating. We highly recommend every single one!
Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great – Judy Blume. I have been a book–reader my entire life and Judy Blume was one of my childhood heroes for sure! It has been such fun returning to Shelia Tubman’s life again after 30 years. We found it completely age appropriate and a joy to read together! I am looking forward to reading a few of the other books in this series.
What Connor (11) is Reading:
Luck Uglies: Rise of the Ragged Clover by Paul Durham. Connor and I don’t read together very much anymore but he is a serious book lover too. He’s just finished the 3rd book of the Luck Uglies series (he put it on the wait list at the library months ago!) He loved it desperately and mourned it when its was over. If you have a fantasy lover in your family (or if you are one) don’t miss this series.
The War of The Worlds – Great Illustrated Classics Connor has been powering through every single book in the Great Illustrated Classics Series at the School Library. His goal is to complete all of them before school gets out (in 4 days – but who’s counting?) He has enjoyed all of the books he’s read but has definitely been his favorite!
A Wrinkle in Time – the Graphic Novel – Illustrated by Hope Larson. For Christmas he was given a copy of Madeline L’Engle’s Classic, A Wrinkle in Time. He devoured in in exactly 24 hours. So when he found the Graphic Novel at the Library he was thrilled. He enjoyed both of these books so much that he spent his allowance to own a copy of the Graphic Novel. (great for ages 10+)
What Kristen is Reading:
Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. I’m in 2 book clubs (ok 1 book club and 1 gathering of amazing women when we all read the same book, and then meet to drink wine, talk a whole tiny bit about our book and a whole giant bit about our lives- but for the sake of consistency, we will call it book club). In anticipation of the movie we read Mrs. Peregrines home for peculiar children. It was a super easy YA read and I enjoyed it so much ( that I completed the trilogy because when you find a good thing.. .why stop!)
Tribes – By Seth Godin My husband has been trying to get me to read this book for years! I’m just not a self-help/non-fiction reader at heart. I’d rather have a good novel any day. That being said, the last few months have really been an act of soul searching. It was this book that pushed me over the edge and really helped me to see the world in a different way. That offered me the freedom to go against the status quo, to be different and to be a world changer. It’s GOOD- don’t read it if you don’t want to be changed – I’m warning you.
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon. After nearly 4 months, I finally finished the last chapter last week. Now that it’s over, I’d say it was a great read. An epic story of friendship and the comic book industry during World War II. The love story between friends and lovers is a story that will stay with me for years! If you chose to start it do not lose heart. It’s hard to stick with in the beginning, but in the end I definitely found it worth it. I’m glad I pushed through! (don’t say I didn’t warn you).
